The 3×3 Spinpolo format

A Spinpolo drill is typically organised as three chukkas of three minutes, with 90 seconds of active recovery between them. The short block forces riders to choose a sustainable gear from the first minute; going too hard in chukka one usually collapses cadence in chukka three. Coaches can run the format on any stationary bike with a resistance dial and a clear line of sight to the clock.

Why the 90-second recovery is non-negotiable

The recovery is not dead time. It keeps heart rate high enough to train repeat sprint ability but low enough to preserve technique, which is why the drill suits mixed-ability groups better than all-out tabata blocks. Riders who stand for the full recovery lose the pacing benefit; the target is seated spinning at 80–90 rpm with light resistance.

Equipment and safety checks before the first chukka

• Set saddle height so the knee stays slightly bent at the bottom of the pedal stroke; a low saddle increases hip flexor strain during repeated accelerations.
• Test resistance before the clock starts: each rider should be able to hold a controlled 90 rpm in the working gear for 20 seconds.
• Keep water within reach and clear bottles from the handlebar area; Spinpolo’s short turns encourage quick hand changes that can knock loose items.

Coaching cues that keep the drill moving

Use one cue per chukka. In the first, call “smooth circles”; in the second, “quiet shoulders”; in the third, “same cadence, more resistance”. This progression moves attention from coordination to posture to load, which is more effective than shouting a list of corrections. A club timetable entry for spinpolo usually signals a coached format rather than an open bike session, so riders should expect direction on gear and cadence.

What a well-run session should produce

By the final recovery, riders should report steady breathing and no sharp knee pain; if the third chukka requires standing to keep the pedals turning, the starting resistance was too high. The measurable result is not a single peak power number but a smaller drop-off between chukka one and chukka three. Coaches can record cadence at the 60-second mark of each effort and compare it across four weeks; a narrower spread indicates better pacing and repeatability.
