Start with the wagering requirement, not the bonus figure

A large welcome bonus can look like free money until the terms attach a play-through condition to every pound. The problem is that the headline number is marketing, while the wagering requirement is the actual cost of claiming the offer. The cause is simple: bonus funds are not cash, and the operator needs a way to stop players from depositing, claiming, and withdrawing immediately. The solution is to calculate the real target before opting in. A player scanning a casino zombillion bonus page should treat the headline as a starting point, not a promise. If a player claims a £20 bonus at 40x wagering, the play-through target is £800, not £20.

Check which games count toward the target

Not every spin contributes equally. A common problem is that slots may count 100% toward wagering while table games count 10% or less, so a player who moves to blackjack can slow their progress dramatically. The cause is the operator’s margin model: low-house-edge games are less profitable to release bonus funds against. The solution is to open the contribution table before playing and calculate how many spins or hands the target actually requires. If only slots count in full, the bonus is a slots offer even if the lobby advertises hundreds of games.

Watch the maximum bet and the expiry clock

Two small clauses often decide whether a bonus survives. A max-bet rule may cap each spin at £5 while the bonus is active; crossing that cap can void the bonus and any winnings linked to it. The cause is abuse prevention, but the result can be harsh for ordinary players who raise their stake without noticing. The solution is to set a personal stake below the cap and diarise the expiry date. A 30-day clock sounds generous until a player leaves the bonus idle for three weeks and then rushes the wagering target in a single session.

Ask support for a worked example in writing

Terms pages are often clear in isolation and confusing in combination. A player may understand 35x wagering, a £5 max bet, and a 20% table-game contribution separately but still misread how they interact. The cause is that bonus rules are written as separate clauses, not as a single worked calculation. The solution is to ask support for a written example using the exact deposit and game plan. Keep the reply: if a dispute arises, a clear statement from the operator is more useful than a screenshot of the promotion banner.

Build a five-minute checklist before opting in

• Convert the bonus into a play-through target in pounds.
• Confirm which games contribute at 100%.
• Note the max bet, expiry date, and whether bonus funds are locked.
• Check whether winnings from bonus funds are capped.
• Decide the stopping point before the first spin.

That checklist turns a casino zombillion offer from a vague promotion into a measurable deal. The takeaway is not that bonuses are bad; it is that the terms determine whether the bonus fits a player’s bankroll and playing style. Read the numbers first, then decide whether the headline deserves attention.
